![]() I think iTunes allows to add an extra entry in the column browser at "Artist" for compilations. iTunes then asks whether the track should be moved to the bin which I deny. reloading the (edited) mp3 did not cause iTunes to change its database entry and hence kept the original problem.Īs when I talk about "remove" then this means I select the entry in iTunes and call the function Edit>Delete. I finally resorted to reconverting the files via audacity into wav and concurrently removed all "suspicious" data upon conversion, then reloaded the files into iTunes and reconverted the wav files into m4a.Īpparently, there are tags in mp3 which can even be carried over into wav and do not show up in mp3tag. Well, no commentary required, I assume.īut I could not get rid of this hidden tag neither by iTunes nor by mp3tag. It then turned out that apparently this particular album was tagged as "compilation" and hence treated differently by the iPod touch as compared to iTunes. After quite some fiddling around - including rebuilding the data base - I checked with mp3tag for the details of these particular mp3's which had served as source - nothing. ![]() There was no clue within the informations how this could occur. However, upon synchronizing the iPod, one of the albums was missing under the band name although it was present as an "album". This all worked fine and all releases by that particular artist ended up in iTunes under the correct band name. I imported several CD's either as original disc or as flac or mp3 from the net in to iTunes/iPod touch and used the onboard converter to translate mp3 into m4a. Not to mention if you move into classical music and wish to have soloists, conductors, composers etc, organized too.I recently ran across a somewhat curious problem which I believe is worth pointing out here. 2010) to the date field in MediaMonkey, and it shows up in foobar as 00-10-20 and in MP3Tag it pops up in a custom field named Year as 2010,2010 (twice) ?!?Īll of the above makes it very difficult to decide how to build a lasting tag strategy. ![]() The forward slash separator is displayed as a semicolon by MediaMonkey and I have found no explanation for this other than courtesy for AC/DC.Īdd a year only (i.e. but still a huge portion of their library contains these separators, both in title and in filenames. Musicbrainz has officially banned the use of feat. I've notice lately, that when using Foobar to scrape Musicbrainz, the "Album Artist" field is often deleted and left blank. This seems to work fairly well across many systems that I have tried, but not all. Anyway, I use forward slash to separate between contributing artists. In my library (close to 150k MP3 files) I set TPE2="Various Artists" for compilations, and I put the actual artist name in the Artist field (Which again, sometimes is called Artist and sometimes Artists). Thus, populating the ID3 tag in one system may give a messy result in another. And often it is close to impossible to find out which field is actually behind this "friendly name". My understanding is that there is no such field included in the ID3 definition, but many media management systems and Tag Editors use the TPE2 field for this purpose? Thus, in different apps, this field is given names like "AlbumArtists", "Album Artist", AlbumArtist" or "Album Artists" etc. Nevertheless, I have one comment: You refer to a field named "Album Artist". I do agree with you in almost everything (except for the Minim part - because I failed to understand its functions and features - even after visiting their web!) Separate multiple artists using either semicolon or forward slash in the Artist field.ĭo NOT use "feat." or "with" or " & " symbols.Ĭorrect spelling of album and artist names is essential!!Ĭhose a consistent way to organize your library path, my choice were: /share/Multimedia/Music/Artist/Album/Track# - you for sharing. In my experience you have to be prepared to do a major cleaning job on your library before you can use it reliably outside iTunes, but believe me - ones you're out of the straightjacket you'll never regret it. I tried iTunes ones, but Apple's policies and their straightjacket scared me away.
